What Is The Significance Of 21st December 2012?

I have worked out that 12-21-12 is meant to be 21st December 2012.
No-one seems to have explained why this date seems to be important or how it was arrived at.
Could someone please explain its significance.

Busy shopping and wrapping christmas gifts. Cmon it’s 4 days to go.

Its only astronomical significance is that it’s the date of the winter solstice in 2012. By coincidence, it corresponds to the end of a cycle in the Mayan calendar, but this has no astronomical significance…it was just that one civilization’s way of tracking time. Subsequently all sorts of nonsense has been piled on this date, but all of it is conjectural and has no basis in reality.

Astrologists say that we would be entering into what is called the dark plate which the Mayans who named it thus, predict as the harbinger of our apocalypse. Truth is, the dark plate is where our super massive black hole is rotating so fast that it has flattened itself into a disc, this in turn create a gab between the top and bottom of our galaxy where the gravity created is intense enough to affect anything that enters. This is believed to be the cause of the whole 2012 prediction by the Mayans because the gravity would cause pattern changes within our solar system, creating dangerous weather unlike anything we have seen before and a lot of other cool stuff.
Personally I don’t think it will be that intense as many people believe. If anything it will paced out thing where the gravity will not really affect anything. A few strange weather and seismic events would be the most we see, but nothing apocalyptic.
The date is not actually important per say, it is just a calculation based on the amount of time it takes for the event to occur since it has occurred numerous times on Earth according to the Mayans who survived it.

It’s not particularly important at all. Most of the rumors about the date are based on the fact that the Mayan calendar reaches the end of the final “long cycle,” sort of like our own calendar rolling over at the end of a century. The only reason it’s the final cycle is that the Mayans died out before carving the calendar for the next cycle. Some people believe the Mayans had some mystical powers of foresight and could predict the future, and that the end of the calendar means that the Mayans foresaw the end of the world. Since the Mayans couldn’t even predict their own demise, the argument is rather weak.
Other people have tried to link this date to the close passage to the earth of “planet Nibiru” (it doesn’t exist), or a supposed alignment of the earth, the sun, and the center of the galaxy (they don’t align), or any number of other imaginary events.

What silly people claim will happen:
According to the 2012ers it will be the end of the world because
    1. Nostradamus said so
    2. The Mayan calendar ends
    3. An Ouija Board said so
    4. There will be a pole shift
    5. There will be a planetary alignment
    6. There will be a galactic alignment
    7. An asteroid will hit earth
    8. Planet X/ Nibiru will appear
    9. Some crystal skull nonsense
    10. We are heading into a photon belt (whatever that’s supposed to be
    11. Indian Astronomer said so
    12. The Sun will blow up
    13. Some Volcano or Earthquake
    14. A Black Hole will come along
    15. The experiments in CERN’s LHC
    16. The Aztecs said so (2012ers aren’t really good at making a difference between them and the Mayans)
    17. The Arabians said every 60,000 years something bad will happen
    18. The Swedish scientist that are trying to recreate the big bang (2012ers don’t know the difference between Swedes and Swiss either)
    19. Time will speed up
    20. Nibiru will turn the sun into a supernova
21 Gravity will implode (don’t ask what that’s supposed to mean)
and probably some other equally silly reasons.
    What will really happen:
The doomsayers will be very silent about their failure, and invent a new date for the end of the world.

It is an important date in the mythology of the ancient mayans. The mayans had a calendar which was composed of a number of different cycles. One of these was the baktun cycle, with each baktun corresponding to 144000 days or a little under 400 years. In their mythology, the idea was that before our universe came into existence, there were previous universes, but each one of those previous universes was in some sense a failure (i.e. it did not produce a successful society of intelligent beings) and was ended when it reached its 13th baktun cycle, which in the mayan calendar is essentially the equivalent of ‘all the zeroes rolling over’ like what happened in the Gregorian Calendar in the year 2000 (i.e. 1999 -> 2000, all the 9s switch to 0s). On this basis, a whole lot of ignorant, gullible new age crackpots have gotten it into their heads that December 21, 2012 is going to signify the end of the world, and that some sort of apocalypse will happen on that date, generally involving one or more of the following:
    - A tenth planet known as ‘Planet X’ or ‘Nibiru’ will either approach very close to and/or collide with the Earth.
    - The Earth’s magnetic poles will flip over and/or cease to exist, either way allowing charged solar wind particles to reach the Earth’s surface.
    - The Sun and the Earth will line up with the black hole at the center of our galaxy, which will somehow cause a whole lot of gamma rays to shine on the Earth.
    - The Large Hadron Collider will create a microscopic black hole which will consume the Earth.
    - Jesus will return.
Naturally, all this stuff is patent BS with absolutely no foundation in scientific fact. Basically, it’s just a good excuse for a whole lot of cranks to publish books about the end of the world and make a whole lot of money.

The Mayan Long Count calendar clicks over from 12.19.19.17.19 to 13.0.0.0.0 on 21st December 2012. That’s all there is to it. It’s the same as our calendar changing from 1999 to 2000. Some people seem to think that this change ‘must’ be accompanied by some sort of disaster and have concocted all sorts of ridiculous predictions, every one of which is unscientific nonsense.

  8. imacatho

It is four days before Christmas.
One of several Mayan calendars is the Long Count calendar, which is reset to day 0 every 1,872,000 days or 7057.5 years. The next reset date, by some calculations, is December 21, 2012. This is not a prediction of the end of the world.
These predictions are scare tactics, conspiracy theories, and chances to make money from books and movies.
Ever since the Y2K and 6/6/6 (June 6, 2006) End of the World scenarios did not pan out, the scare mongers, conspiracy theorists, book sellers, and television executives have been touting the 2012 End of the World scenario. When 2012 does not happen either, I am sure they will think of something else.
“But of that day or hour, no one knows, neither the angels in heaven, nor the Son, but only the Father. Be watchful! Be alert! You do not know when the time will come.” (Mark 13:32-33)
Jesus told us in no uncertain terms that we were not to know when the end of the world would come but that we were always to be ready.
The early Christian Church thought that Jesus was going to return at any moment. Only after a couple of centuries did the Church realize that it may be 2,000 or 4,000 or 8,000 years before Jesus returns.
The Catholic Church wisely follows Jesus’ advice and teaches that each of us should live as if we will meet our maker in the next ten minutes and that we need to work to make the world a better place for our 100 X great-grandchildren.
Do not worry about the end of the world. Trust God to make sure everything happens to plan. Just be ready to meet God at any time.

Winter solstice 2012 is just the revealing of the ‘antichrist’ or the ‘man of perdition’ at the mid-point of what Christians call the 7 year Tribulation (just subtract 1260 days to get the start and add 1260 days to get the end). Satanists and many pagan cultures from every corner of the world all throughout history have celebrated this like the Sumerians, Babylonians, Cherokee, Hopi, Chinese I-Ching (confirmed by Terence McKenna), Mayans (Pacal Votan; Chilam Balam of Tizimin, Mani, Chumayel; Jaguar Prophet), Egyptians, Celts, etc. This evil event is called “the abomination that causes desolation” that will be set up in the Jewish Temple’s Holy of Holies when the antichrist is imbued with the spirit of satan himself. When will Jesus come? Only God Himself knows exactly, but very soon in “the twinkling of an eye” and like “a thief in the night”. If you believe or not, that is up to you; either way it still comes.

Christians look forward to this as it means they will soon join their Saviour & Redeemer in the Millennial Kingdom of the next Age and their Heavenly Father later as “Children of Light”. If you try to equate 2012 with Y2K or some other date that cried wolf, then you will be making the worst mistake of your lifetime. Research all these things FOR YOURSELF!

It’s not the end of the world, people. The Mayans just said it’s a change of eras. According to them, eras end in chaos, and then slowly begin rebuilding themselves.
World’s been pretty chaotic lately, no? Just imagine what the economical crisis will bring in the next 3 years.

  11. cheddars

In Mayan legends, creation happened at the end of a 13th cycle of their long count calender. 12/21/12 is the end of the another 13th cycle and very superstitious people think that will be the end of humanity.

  12. Frankie

People say it’s the end of the world. According to the mayan calendar, nostradamus prophecies. But some say it’s wrong date, too early.

that’s when the mayan calendar ends which has lead some to believe is when the world will end.
