Gemma was in the changing room of a department store when a panic attack started. She had the horrible sensation that her heart was beating too fast. She began trembling all over and felt hot and sweaty. She felt as if she was dying. She ended up running out of the store to find a quiet place to sit until she felt better.

by Terrel Lucas

Susanne had a panic attack one day after a flight. She started the attack when the plane was airborne and went to a doctor as soon as it touched down. She thought she was having heart attack symptoms, but also felt she was a bit too young for such a thing to happen. Her doctor told her she had actually had a panic attack and prescribed her some medication.

Worldwide millions of people endure the terrible symptoms of panic attacks. A panic attack is defined as a sudden surge of incapacitating fear that suddenly comes without warning and without any obvious reason. Although many panic attacks can last for over half an hour, some unpleasant symptoms can last longer.

Today, more than at any other time in history, being anxious, tense or nervous is part of the world we live in. There are hundreds of thousands of people who are suffering from panic attacks today.

Do you suffer from any of these symptoms of panic attacks?

Many people experience a slight case of “butterflies in the stomach” when facing a tense situation, but full-blown anxiety attack symptoms can mean severe nausea or stomach cramps, along with muscles so tense they hurt to move, tingling or numbness in the fingers, toes, and on the face, bouts of sweating, and a pounding heartbeat. There may also be symptoms such as the fear that you are losing your mind, and feeling disassociated with your surroundings, as if you are viewing a movie.

Doctors and researchers are constantly looking for new treatments every day simply because such a large percentage of the population suffers from panic attacks and anxiety. Conventional treatments for panic attacks usually consist of medication, therapy and teaching suffers how to cope with the symptoms of panic attacks through cognitive behavioural therapy. Besides using conventional medicine, doctors often recommend meditation and relaxation techniques to help patients deal with anxiety and stress.

Sadly, some people have taken medication to help with their anxiety only to discover that the unpleasant side effects they experienced were actually worse than the panic attacks themselves. Other therapies involve teaching the suffer “coping strategies’, which involve dealing with a panic attack once it actually starts.
